Satellite #5, Pioneer 2016

Artist Stephen Talasnik, whose sculptural works have been informed by the drawings of Buckminster Fuller, recently completed a large scale outdoor installation at the Tippet Rise Art Center in Fishtail, Montana. The piece is inspired by Space Architecture of the 1960’s and was engineered by Arup.

The all-wooden sculpture rises some 35 feet with a variable footprint of 45 x 35 feet. It’s comprised of eighty 6 inch diameter cedar logs supported by seven clusters of corten steel feet. It contains three habitable “rooms” or “seeds”. and is nestled within a geological bowl at the 11,000 acre performing art center which opened this past summer.

A documentary short, “The Aesthetics of Exploration” (6:30 minutes in length) about Pioneer’s construction was a featured Opening Night film at this years’ Architecture and Design Film Festival (ADDF) and can be seen here and other works by the artist can be seen at www.stephentalasnik.com.
