Bucky Ball Solar Engineering

A team of researchers and students at Souther Illinois Univeristy (SIU) is investigating new methods of increasing the efficiency of solar cells by breaking down and recombining buckminsterfullerenes (Bucky balls). Kyle Plunkett, Xinju Zhu and their team at SIU are working to break down the Bucky balls embedded in solar cell collectors. By breaking down the fullerenes and recombining the fragments into specific patterns of single and double bond networks to allow a freer flow of electrons harvested, they have been showing the promise of extending this technique throughout the industry.
