Towards Climate Stabilization

An eight-week online course on how to think like nature and design a world that meets the needs of 100% life.

Trimtab Space Camp is an immersive, multidimensional program that aims to destabilize the illusion of separation that pervades modern culture, to paint a new picture of the world, a new way of relating, while sharing the models, tools, and frameworks that enable you to bring forth a world that works for 100% of Life.

From design science, rapid prototyping, complexity, climate resilience, regenerative agriculture, biomimicry, and many other modalities, you will have an opportunity to learn from world-leading change-makers alongside a global community of peers, and apply your learnings to real-world projects within your communities.

By attending this course you will gain a comprehensive whole-systems view of the climate crisis, and novel approaches to carbon sequestering, climate justice, climate tech, and climate finance.

Course Structure

This course is made up of 6 live video sessions spread over 2 months, with bonus, elective sessions throughout, and supported by a thriving online community platform.

Each session will be held live on Zoom and will last for approximately 2 hours. They will feature a range of activities, including guest speakers (and multiple opportunities for speaker-participant engagement), community discussion spaces, self-exploratory & embodiment exercises, and more.

You can participate in as much or as little as you wish, or are able. Each session will be recorded in case you cannot attend the live sessions.

Where ideas are turned into action

With guidance from world-leading doers and thinkers, you will have an opportunity to ideate, develop, and reform regenerative projects in real-time with their own team of peers.

You will leave the course with a firm understanding of design thinking principles, feeling empowered to put your pilot or project into action within your communities.

Lead or support

What is your idea? What brought you to the course? Could it use a global team of systems thinkers to support it through comprehensive anticipatory design science?

This course is a celebration of collaboration, and if no ideas are coming to you at the time of sign-up, it may be because you are being called to support another mission instead.

BFI supports and incubates small independent projects and programs that face these funding restrictions.

Guest Speakers

Judith Schwartz

Judith Schwartz is an author who tells stories to explore and illuminate scientific concepts and cultural nuance. She writes for numerous publications, including The American Prospect, The Guardian, Discover, Scientific American, and YaleE360. Her latest book, “The Reindeer Chronicles”, is a global tour of earth repair, featuring stops in Norway, Spain, Hawai’i, New Mexico, and beyond. Judy has a B.A. from Brown University, an M.S.J. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern.

Ryan Allard is a company founder, a researcher, a speaker, and formerly a

business consultant and trader. He brings expertise in transportation systems and climate change in the USA, Europe and the Caribbean. He led transport research that fed the New York Times Bestseller: & Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming". He also led teams that analyzed and modeled climate solutions in buildings and several other sectors that contribute to global warming.

He has published international peer-reviewed research and presented at international conferences on mass transit, high-speed rail, car

technologies, and other sustainable transport. Prior to this, Ryan worked in the business consulting and finance industries.

Ryan has PhD and MSc degrees in transportation systems (from the Technical University of Lisbon, in Portugal), and he also has a BSc degree in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering (from MIT in the US).

Dr Brian Von Herzon

Brian von Herzon obtained his A.B. in Physics from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in Computer and Planetary Science from Caltech where he was the recipient of the prestigious Hertz Fellowship. While at Princeton, Brian spent four years working closely with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.  At Princeton, his dissertation on global climate models demonstrated how changes in the Earth’s orbit affects climate.  During his Caltech years Brian worked on models of the overabundance of carbon in Jupiter’s atmosphere.  Much of Brian’s career has been in Silicon Valley, where he developed innovative technical solutions for companies like Pixar, Dolby, Microsoft, and others. Among other projects, he designed field programmable gate array (FPGA) applications considered to be among the world’s fastest at the time.

Brian leads projects on land and sea with  individuals and groups in all parts of the world, including India, Africa, and the USA

Karl Burkart is the Deputy Director of One Earth, which supports academic institutions and NGOs working on the cutting edge of climate and energy science, biodiversity mapping, and sustainable agriculture. 

Prior to his work at the foundation, Karl was formerly the Director of Media, Science & Technology at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, and creator of Greendig, a blog exploring the intersection between technology and environmental sustainability. He produced and wrote ‘Planet 100’, the Discovery Network’s first online video news show, and he led digital advocacy for the TckTckTck campaign, a global network of more than 450 NGOs working to secure a strong international climate agreement under the UNFCCC.

Tenzin Seldon

Tenzin Seldon is a climate leader and solutionist who has been on the frontlines of migration, social enterprise, tech, and climate work for over a decade and half. Today Tenzin is Founder and Managing Partner of Pulse Fund. Pulse is an innovative climate fund, focused on investing big in the future of energy, infrastructure, mobility and food & agriculture. The team Tenzin leads has over 250 years experience in climate and investing.

Previously, Tenzin co-founded The Plant, with the bold vision of creating a net-negative global home for climate solutions through the redevelopment and adaptive reuse of historic buildings. Prior to The Plant, Tenzin worked at the United Nations Regional Office of Asia and the Pacific and the United Nations Environment Programme, where she monitored and recommended policy for the region’s disaster relief efforts. Her work has been recognized in Forbes magazine’s “30 Under 30” list, as the social entrepreneur “Most Likely to Impact the Next Century”, and in OZY Magazine as one of their “5 Civil-Rights Leaders for a New Generation.”

Tom Chi has worked in roles ranging from astrophysical researcher to Fortune 500 consultant to corporate executive leading hardware/software team to develop innovative products & services. He pioneered and practices a unique approach to rapid prototyping and leadership that can jumpstart innovative new ideas and move large organizations at unprecedented speeds. He was head of Product Experience and a founding member of Google X, and current works to accelerate a future where humanity becomes a net positive to nature as Managing Partner of At One Ventures.

Chad Frischmann

Chad Frischmann is the co-author, lead researcher and principal architect of the Drawdown Solutions Framework behind the New York Times best-seller Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming, and all communications and engagement efforts at Project Drawdown, a leading resource for climate solutions. 

Leading a global team of researchers, Chad designed integrated global tools to assess the world’s most effective climate solutions and determine if, when, and how the world can reach “drawdown,” the point in time when the concentration of atmospheric greenhouse gases begins to decline on a year-to-year basis. As head of Drawdown Solutions since Project Drawdown’s inception, Chad is a key spokesperson and coalition-builder dedicated to sharing the message and model of the Drawdown Framework to the world.

Julia Jackson is the founder of Grounded, which convenes and fosters collaboration between the world’s foremost climate change experts: a diverse community of solutionists, scientists, policymakers, investors, executives and front-line organizations to cross-pollinate transformative ideas and innovative solutions. Julia is a passionate climate activist who is devoted to mitigating the climate crisis.

Marilyn Waite

Marilyn Waite leads the Climate Finance Fund, focusing on mobilizing capital for climate solutions. Her writing has appeared in numerous media outlets, including the Financial Times, Forbes, and GreenBiz, where she serves as editor-at-large. Marilyn serves on a number of boards and investment committees.

Previously, Marilyn managed the climate and clean energy finance portfolio at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and led energy and cleantech investments at Village Capital, managed nuclear and renewable energy projects at AREVA (now Orano and Framatome), and served as a Senior Research Fellow at Project Drawdown, where she led a team to model, quantify, and forecast the viability of energy solutions to curb climate change.

Kurt Przybilla is an inventor, writer, producer, and educator. He invented Tetra Tops®, the world’s first spinning top with more than one axis of spin, which were inspired by the works of Buckminster Fuller and have been featured in the New York Times, Popular Science, Baby Einstein, Child and Discover Magazine, as well as at the Smithsonian Institute.

He is co-creator, writer and producer of the Molecularium Project at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he has produced and co-written Molecules to the MAX!, a 3D animated film for Giant Screen IMAX theaters, Molecularium, an award-winning digital dome feature, and NanoSpace, an award-winning, game-based online

The live core sessions will be held on Tuesdays, and will last for 2 hours.

Accessibility and Care Considerations

The live course sessions will be conducted via Zoom. The sessions will be transcribed live via Grain and a copy of the transcription will be shared a few days after the session. Because Grain is an automated transcription service, we can’t guarantee its accuracy. There will not be verbal or text descriptions of visual material and the sessions will not be translated into any other language. We reserve the right to record all the sessions. The video, audio, and chat file from the live sessions will be provided within days of the session to all the course participants.

The live sessions will have several hundred people on them and they may sometimes have a chaotic quality to them. For example, there may be moments when everyone is invited to unmute and to share gratitude, which can be loud and jarring for some. Also, while the Zoom chat can be a very helpful way to interact with other participants, some people can find it distracting. It is possible to move the Zoom chat out of the field of view but this requires a few extra steps.

Participants will have full agency in deciding their level of engagement with the live sessions. They can choose whether to have their camera on or not, whether to call in with their phone, and whether to join breakout rooms. No one is ever forced to speak in front of the crowd.

Trimtab Space Camp is a global and diverse community, and it would be natural for challenges to arise as a result of different beliefs and world views. While the spirit of Space Camp is one of openness and mutual gratitude, during each of the live sessions, there will be an on-call Care Team who can assist anyone who feels they may need emotional support at any time. The Care Team is a group of dedicated volunteers – and fellow participants in the course – who are experienced in supporting conflicts and people experiencing strong emotions.

The other platform we’ll be using for this course is Slack. Slack is a social messaging platform where people can post text, audio, images, videos, or links and these can be viewed in a ‘feed’. This allows participants to engage with one another in between sessions. Participant engagement on this platform is completely optional.

While we endeavor to make the course as streamlined as possible, technical difficulties can occur, and the BFI team will be on hand to assist in any way possible.
