The S.A.T. Project

SUMMARY: Megacities around the world are facing similar syndromes, fragmented urban landscapes, high infrastructure investments, social unrest in dense city cores, rural-urban migrations, among others, while following traditional transportation schemes and applying the latest IT solutions to administrate increasing traffic congestion, while issuing urgent policies to tackle its consequences. It is no overstatement to suggest that we are facing urban gridlocks globally. Moreover, new born cities are already suffering the same syndromes that older cities, showing that present solutions appear to be only temporal palliatives to a common disorder of a greater magnitude.
The S.A.T. has been benchmarked to mass transportation modes, at Delft University of Technology, based on a pessimistic approach -without using the potentialities of a 3D displacement. The results showed a better performance in all fields analyzed.
Today, desperate efforts to efficiently administrate a collapsed ground level, new technologies such as PRT or electric vehicles have been conceived under the present paradigm, and as an enhancement of existing technologies. The S.A.T. on the contrary, has been designed from a holistic perspective, a systemic approach to understanding a new dimension for the sustainable evolution of cities. Sooner or later, we will have to face the fact that the ground level is a surface, and thus, a limited area to share the plurality of urban functions.

PROBLEM SPACE: Megacities around the world are at a crossroads, regarding climate change, sustainability of the built environment and urban gridlocks. The concept of 3D Transportation builds the technological platform to rethink the present concept of cities. S.A.T. PROJECT is the first mass public-private 3D Transportation system for people & freight in the world, working under all 3 directions of movement.

Today, worldwide cities have reached the point where the very foundational concepts that have once encouraged the creation of cities (diversity, density and agglomeration) are becoming the main forces that are questioning contemporary unsustainable urban models. Today while virtual networks are connecting people beyond urban boundaries physical networks are broken. All present means of transportation work in 2D. The invention of the car has shaped the urban territory encouraging sprawl in the horizontal dimension; while the elevator has defined building typologies to rise (expand) in the ‘vertical dimension’.

The concept of 3D transportation gives the technological scaffold to set a new dimension to urban evolution, fostering the development of Cities Spatially.

A 3D mobility will allow commuting within spatial coordinates, generating interrelation between different floor levels and inner and outdoors. A dynamic-routing and the versatility of interactive circuits, will define S.A.T. as the ‘reactive element’ to a future intermodal transportation network, the consolidation of a real-time circulatory system within the city, between sea, land and air transportation modes.

A 3D transportation network will manage people and freight under a dynamic-routing with variable frequencies, speed and levels. A 3D logistics system will allow a continuous automated 24/7 feeding network, with no interruptions and time reliable, based on a complex matrix of physical connections, S.A.T. will act as a conveyor belt within the city, linking natural resources, manufacturers, storage areas and department stores, non dependent on a collapsed ground level. S.A.T. will promote the re-organization of a City in terms of urban-mobility.

SOLUTION: The S.A.T. Project defines a paradigmatic shift, opening the threshold to 3D-urban transportation worldwide, which will allow re-thinking present cities as dynamic-hubs where:
•The implementation of a S.A.T. layout will be able to cope with mass-transportation demands while responding nearly to a private scale, breaking up with the present concept of mass-transportation.
•Switching from today’s weak mass transportation surveillance to 3D interactive and nearly individual scale commuting infrastructure, generating a rise in urban governance standards;
•A 3D-mobiity will be economically self-sustainable, increase the city’s benefits while decreasing direct and indirect costs in terms of social and economical implications (pollution, congestion, travel time, traffic accidents, health standards, etc);
•Free emergency routes will be guaranteed under any circumstances. The efficiency and versatility of the S.A.T. will connect emergency and security forces performing a dynamic response regarding access and evacuation pathways;
•Under extreme climates conditions, a 3D commuting and logistic matrix will provide quality and safer commuting;
•A spatial transformation of the city will be induced from an ecological concern.
•Commuting in S.A.T. will respond to the highest security standards, with a complete range of patented devices.
•Today freight transportation is carried out when the cities are ‘asleep’, given the incompatibility of commuting passengers with heavy loads or even dangerous materials; a 3D-logistics matrix will conceive a 24/7 ‘feeding’ network, while guaranteeing an independent, on time, safer transportation with no accidents, exponentially activating economic, social, policy and market patterns;
•The traffic-flow speed in the city will increase by more than 10 times, due to the versatility of a 3D-network under the innovative “open-circuit” configuration.
•S.A.T.’s innovation of a “Public-Private” transportation system will be an advantage in defining the interaction of running private convoys under a public circuits (i.e. owned by Hotels, Airlines, Post, etc.) and by directly setting investments under PPP strategies;
•The S.A.T. will be the trigger to intermodal transportation, by linking sea, land and air transportation terminals and fluently dispersing people and freight from and to the city.
