Polystyrene Dome Questions

Submitted by Polyman on Thu, 2008-07-31 17:16.

I want to construct a 15m diameter, frequency 3, 4/9 truncation geodesic dome entirely of thick walled (ideally 200-300 mm S grade Polystyrene) panels. The panels will be longitudinally finger jointed (a sinusoidal wave pattern of 25mm depth) along their edges so that once the dome is completed a single panel would be mechanically held in place and could not be dislodged even if there was localised failure of the

Heating

Submitted by DomeMountain on Mon, 2008-03-17 12:10.

Having to add a permanent heating and cooling system to the Dome will be quite a trick. I had hoped to use radiant heating, maybe hooked to a geothermal system, but the cost will be way to much. I left space in the floor as I built because I didn't realize that I should have put the tubes in the cement base as I poured the original floor. Now I have sections of six inch rises and 4 inch rises. I was going to put 2 inches of insulation down and tubing and then pour cement on top. So much for trying to fix my mistakes.

Dome Owners Creating Web Pages to Display Their Progress

Some of American Ingenuity’s Dome enthusiasts created websites and blogs to spread the word.

In the British Virgin Islands, Craig’s Dome is coming along beautiful. There is the most breath taking view. See his pictures and even order prints at: http://picasaweb.google.com/MirkoSangers/CraigDomeBVI?authkey=AnY4kGwflwY

Effects of Holes and Openings in Geodesic Dome

Submitted by pollock1985 on Wed, 2007-11-07 11:08.

Hi,
I'm about to start my dissertation on the effects of holes and openings in Geodesic Domes. I have never dealt with geodesic domes in the past, and have little/no experience in the structural analysis of them.

There isn't a lot of information in my uni library, and am wondering if anyone knows of any good literature on the subject. Even if you know of any good books on the subject of geodesic domes would help greatly.

Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks very much,
Andrew

BUCKMINSTER FULLER C60 TYPEFACE

Submitted by jsmith on Tue, 2007-09-18 02:20.

hi,
i designed a typeface a few years ago, imposing the rules of the c60 / buckyball structure to letters etc, with the nodes and connectors becoming the design of the letterforms.
i'm looking to return to it in the near future, completing a lower case, and improving the upper case.
i was contacted a while back about using it on a book cover about buckyballs / rbf etc, which didnt amount to anything in the end, so i thought i'd post a pdf of it here, to see if anyone's interested in it in any way.
thanks

Monolithic Dome

Submitted by bertr on Thu, 2007-09-13 23:24.

I would like to start a talk about the following:

The possibilities of Designing and Constructing a Monolithic Glass or Growth Crystal Dome. The ultimate goal is to have a relatively self-sustaining stable environment, capable of supporting a population of 500 to 2500 inhabitants, with a micro economy for basic support and trade internally and externally. so we are talking here of a rather large dome with a ground base diameter of from 500 to 1500 meters. This will most likely turn out to be a true half dome, with a possible portion under ground elevation.

modules for spheres

Submitted by ammarvi on Sun, 2007-08-12 15:40.

First of all, i want to apologise because of my horrible english, i´m from Spain and i´m not used to write in this language.
I´m trying to project a stand made of glass spheres.
Each sphere has different radius and they are conected between them.
The glass is curved, and the stand has to be portable, so the structure mustn´t be fixed.

Hi Everyone,

We are looking for an Engineer that understands geodesic structures. We currently have structural analysis but not accurate engineering documents. Please help if you can, you can check out our web site for better understanding if necessary. Pacificdomes.com or call 888-488-8127. Thank you for all of your help.

need help on glass dome

Submitted by sergio_cohen on Thu, 2007-07-05 17:05.

Well, after months studying, practicing and modeling on domes, finally they asking me to build a real one.

Should be a 2 mt radio, all glass, to be on top of a roof.
Kind of stressed skin done.
Im not architect, but modeling is coming ok.

The real thing:
- freq.3 dome
- 2 mt radio
- laminated glass 6mm
- "F" aluminum 1,6 mm

(need two of them screwed together and bend it 12 degrees.)

Is there anyone on this insitute who can give me some advice on calculating structures, weights, etc. ??
Anyone made similar one?
Thanks in advance,
Sergio (argentina)

UK geodesic expertise???

Submitted by NAS A on Fri, 2007-06-15 07:01.

I'm a young architect undertaking my first ever dome design.

I'm looking for UK based experitse to advise on the design of a 40'(12m)dia residential dome, 3 frequency high profile 5/8 profile. The dome is likely to be fully insulated, but also investigating simpler dome using roundwood struts as a rain screen only, with insulated straw bale 'boxes' under cover.

Geodisic Dome Windmill?

Submitted by Reflexion on Thu, 2007-04-26 15:29.

Some years ago, someone teached me some things about Bucky (synergetics, geodesic dome, spaceship earth, etc.). But one of them capted my attention.

He told me that it was possible to build a windmill inside a geodesic dome and that some people experienced it and got winds of 100 kph inside the dome.

I am looking for explanations and pictures of this concept, but the most valuable info I found was this one: http://www.buckminster.info/Ideas/10-EndEnergyWindmillDome.htm

and this one, explaning the common problems of recent(1970's) wind turbine:

Dome Interiors: Cost?

Submitted by domelf on Thu, 2007-01-25 05:42.

Domes? I have to have one. Saw a dome home as a child in a magazine and was hooked. My interest was recently renewed.

What about the interiors though? Are there people that specialize in this? I see a lot about dome frames and delivery charges. I see floor plans mentioned. But nothing so far about the cost of completing the interior. Are there contractors that, once they know the size of the dome, can they easily quote a price for labor and suppplies? Like some kind of modular interior kit they can plug into the size/diameter, once they know it, for 1 or 2 floors?

I guess I'm trying to find out if it is easier than having the interior (floor, all rooms including bathrooms and kitchen...)of a non-dome house done. Or is it exactly the same? All the same steps exactly?
