In the last 24 hours I've added significant content to the I've tried to keep it bare bones. The advisory was to keep it accessible, not too technical. I wrote a blog entry about my trepedations in doing these edits, as well as about my objectives. I do think the page is improved. Kirby
Four Things Common To: Capitalism, Marxism, Communism and SocialismSubmitted by William Daniels on Sat, 2010-01-16 15:01.
1) They are not ALL inclusive. They pit one group against another within the system. They then pit the system itself against the other systems in use elsewhere on our planet. 2) They all use mediums of exchange (money). 3) They make no clear distinction between finance and economics. They use the terms finance and economics interchangeably, as if they are the same. 4) They do not recognize the FACT that production and distribution capacity is now so great, that we have entered The Age of Abundance. All current economic management systems are competitive in nature. The spaceship called the International Space Station, however, is a cooperative venture. It is clear to those directly involved that a cooperative approach yields results unattainable through competition. This is a good model for the astronauts aboard Spaceship Earth. Mediums of exchange (money) are notoriously unreliable in operation, primarily because they do not correspond directly to anything that is fact based. Having a currency that is backed by gold does not resolve this issue. Human desire for gold changes continuously. Mediums of exchange allow slipping in the idea that goods and services can be used today and paid for tomorrow. However the Universe and planet Earth do not allow for this fanciful idea. Farmers cannot harvest crops at the beginning of the growing season and “pay” by planting at the end of the season. The Universe is a pre-pay system. Once goods and services are used, they are fully “paid” for. Wax poetic and moralistic all you care to, debt is a form of enslavement, pure and simple. When economics is examined independently of finance, it is surprisingly simpler and always fact based. Webster defines economics as “….production, distribution and consumption (use) of goods and services”. With or without human beings the Universe produces, distributes and uses goods and services, continuously. The Universe is an economy, The Economy. It doesn’t use money and never charges for anything. The Universe never measures anyone’s confidence to determine whether airplanes will fly. Through much of our history on Spaceship Earth, humans have used tools and animals to perform work for us. Starting with the Industrial Revolution, we have been spectacularly successful at inventing and using machines to carry out physical tasks and now to process information rapidly. We can now produce far more than we need. We are in THE AGE OF ABUNDANCE. Earning a living and using mediums of exchange in order to have access to goods and services that support a quality life are now obsolete. They are not only obsolete, they are counter productive. They lead to enormous waste, catastrophic environmental damage and they tend to demean and suppress creativity and the human spirit. It is now possible to produce a higher standard and quality of living for everyone, require far less human labor, and have direct access to goods and services with no erratic middle-man (money). Weather Professionals can add Environmental Reporting to Job DescriptionSubmitted by nudnick on Tue, 2010-01-12 07:25.
In Atlanta as other communities we have so many well trained Meteorologists. The past weekend I saw well meaning reporters out in a 1.5 inch snow commenting on the size of snowflakes. Each evening these great communicators with a background in science tell us what we already know ( 99 % of the time ). It is raining! I am sending a proposal to the AMS to consider adding environmenal reporting to its bag of tricks. What a perfect match. Well trained reporters with a basic education in science should add local environmental issues to the nightly broadcast..... Example: " Hi, the is Anthony Park with EPU and tonight you can see the major areas in Georgia currently in the Superfund sites. The level of toxins in our waters today are " ....you get the idea. As our society deals with rapid changes in technology, it would enable the members of AMS to both preserve Anthony W. Park, EPU Georgia

The leak of galaxies detected in the universeSubmitted by abdula on Tue, 2010-01-05 09:56.
The tremendous flow of galaxy clusters, remote from us 3 billion light years away, stretching for hundreds of Mpc and running at speeds of about a thousand kilometers per second, is a huge imprint on the interaction of our universe with another universe. This conclusion sum of two groups of astrophysicists and cosmologists research papers. Last year, Alexander Kashlinsky and his colleagues at the Goddard Space Center have discovered giant flux of galactic clusters, rushing at great speed in one direction. This mysterious phenomenon of universal scale is called the "dark flow", by analogy with the two other mysteries of the cosmos - dark matter and dark energy. If our space is represented as a table, and visible matter - in a puddle of water on it, it seems that our universe someone slightly bent.

South Pole dome sectionsSubmitted by Dick Fischbeck on Wed, 2009-12-30 15:13.
Hi All We, the BFI volunteers, are trying to get a section of the Bucky South Pole dome donated to the Henry Ford Museum to go along with Bucky's dymaxion house and car. Any help you can provide toward achieving this goal will be greatly appreciated. Brandon "Shaggy" Neahusan is assigned to the task. One section is already going to the SeaBee's museum. Alternative Energy/otherSubmitted by jonbrock on Tue, 2009-12-22 01:53.
I have been a Bucky fan "light is right" for a while. I saw domes at Pacific High in 1970. I had the privilege of hearing Buckminster Fuller speak at Portland Community Collage in about 1971. If I am right about building a mile geodesic sphere, there would be many applications, one of which could be a portable desalinization plant. Covered with solar panels, we would have a portable power plant for any need. I believe we can build this sphere by submerging it as it is assembled. I would like to know if I am right as I am not an engineer. Could someone who is let me know so I can start bending ears.

FlextegritySubmitted by kirbyu on Thu, 2009-12-17 17:29.
Flextegrity refers to a set of omnidirectional lattice-building solutions. The website provides a lot of good information. Sam Lanahan is the inventor of this modular building system. I share about flextegrity, tensegrity and elastic interval geometry when encouraging next generation interest in what design science has to offer.

Design Science approach to HealthcareSubmitted by andiberkley on Wed, 2009-12-02 19:13.
Comprehensiveness — This seems to be the current approach that the Obama Administration is taking to health care by attempting to include medical insurance for every individual in the United States. This seems to be the comprehensive side of this strategy. Leaving people out would be antagonistic to the comprehensiveness of this strategy.

Adrian shares this new animation: http://www.antiprism.com/misc/jit_cubo_oct2.gif "The edges are doubled at the octet truss stage. The cuboctahedra collapse down volumetrically into an You can make this shape from a jitterbug model. Place it on a triangular face. Halfway up is a hexagon of vertices. Push three alterate vertices into the centre. Make the six vertical slanting triangles into three slanting diamonds. The loss of volume then is 6 tetrahedra per cuboctahedron. There is originally one octahedron per cuboctahedron so the 1 octahedron + 1 cuboctahedron : 1 octahedron + 2 tetrahdera Another way to see this is by considering that the transformation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trihexagonal_tiling The triangle to hexagon ratio is 2 : 1. When you jitterbug it 1 hexagon + 2 triangles : 2 triangles In the cuboctahedron/octahedron to octahedron/tetrahedron transformation there is no contraction normal to the plane of trihexahedral jitterbugging and so this ratio is also the ratio of volumes before and after the transformation. I have made another video from a different angle that

Apparently No One Has Notified The Universe....Submitted by William Daniels on Tue, 2009-10-06 19:38.
APPARENTLY, NO ONE HAS NOTIFIED THE UNIVERSE THAT THERE IS AN ECONOMIC CRISIS ON EARTH Sunshine is still beaming aboard the planet at the same rate as before the crisis began. Corn, rice, almonds, olives and peanuts are still growing and producing at the same rate as they did before the crisis. The same is happening with all food crops everywhere. Airplanes still have the same load carrying capacity. Automobiles get the same fuel mileage pre and post crisis. The capacity of trees to produce lumber products has not changed. Butter and iron ore still melt at their same respective temperatures. The amount of electricity it takes to power 60 watt light bulbs has been constant. However, despite this consistency, the Associated Press (10/5/2009) reported that the “…financial meltdown…wiped out 11% -- $6.6 trillion -- of household wealth in six months". Webster defines economics as: ”…production, distribution and consumption (use) of goods and services”. The Universe produces stuff. The Universe distributes stuff. The Universe uses stuff. So, the Universe IS an economy, THE Economy. However, the Universe works differently than the human “economy”. The Universe does all this producing, distributing and using according to specific rules that don’t change. The rules of the human “economy” change continuously. Also, the Universe has no “medium of exchange”. It lets sunshine and rain fall on everyone who happens to be in the path of the sunbeams and water drops. Air is available to everyone, everywhere on the Earth surface. Crops grow for all humans who follow the rules for growing plants. In other words the Universe is a direct-access system, no money, no middle-men. So, I suggest that we humans do one of two things: Either way, I think things would work better. Having two systems is very cumbersome. William Daniels

How About Creating A Direct-Access Economic Management System?Submitted by William Daniels on Sat, 2009-09-12 16:35.
HOW ABOUT CREATING A DIRECT-ACCESS ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AND GET RID OF MONEY (MEDIUM-OF-EXCHANGE) BASED ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS? Along with fear, guilt and sex, money is a favorite tool that humans use to control each other. Get rid of money? Those who control monetary systems: the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve, etc. and large international businesses, use money to control governments. Governments use money to control other governments, their own citizens and smaller businesses. Businesses use money to control their employees. Customers sometimes use money to control businesses. Parents use money to control their children. Siblings and friends use money to control each other. Back and forth, and on and on, money is a very effective weapon that is used by almost everyone. Is money necessary? To manage an economy, absolutely not. Contrary to popular belief, money is not necessary to live. What is necessary to live? Food, shelter, health care, education, communication, transportation and recreation, these are necessary to live a quality life. Has nature ever charged money for sunlight, rain, food plants, metal ores, petroleum, air, electrical energy, cotton, trees, granite, sand, fire, etc? We have repeated the lie so often that it takes money to live, that we mostly don’t even question the idea, and when it is questioned, it is met with ridicule, amusement or dismissal, because it is so outrageous to conceive of living without money. Economics is: production, distribution and use of goods and services. Nature, is an economy. Nature produces stuff. Nature distributes stuff. Nature uses stuff. Nature does this continuously. Money is A method of managing a local economy. It is a tool. It is used to determine who gets, how much access to, goods and services. The fundamental principle of money is: I am “withholding from” you, what I have. Only if you have something that I value equally, or more, than something I have, will I exchange with you. Nature, on the other hand, “shares with”, freely. Nature allows everyone to pick fruits and vegetables, absorb sunlight, have rain fall on them and breathe air. Nature allows airplanes built with US dollars to fly equally well over countries that use Yen, Marks and Yuan and over oceans with no money system at all. Has Nature ever charged for anything? How can we manage an economy without money? It is possible to measure the energy, materials, labor and process time that it takes to produce all goods and services. We do most of this already, although we pay attention almost exclusively to the ever-changing money value of these. It is also possible to establish a principle that says: If you exist, you are entitled to an equal amount of all the energy that is available for all human endeavors. This is direct-access economic management, no money necessary, simple, fair, honest, loving. Direct-access is possible. Money is incredibly stimulating though, both on the giving and receiving sides of the control dynamic. William Daniels

Legal places to live if you have nothingSubmitted by Dick Fischbeck on Wed, 2009-08-12 15:36.
AP photo of Camp Ontario last year. Things have changed since then. The learning curve increase. There IS a legal solution, it turns out! Universal emergency or disaster shelter may soon be a shared work around the planet built by design scientist and anyone else who wants to help. Legal living situations. Ultra-low-cost. Always legal. Civil rights intact. No more chasing and running. This is not camping. Camping is recreation, not home. We can begin to build a scalable village model site in Sacramento and applaud Sacramento's push for Safe Ground. Everyone needs to have a place to sleep day after day. Sleep is a right. World Shelters is in the lead here now. I will post updates as Camp Sacramento emerges. I suspect other cities around the continent will improve on these effort as a solution for unsheltered people as experience grows.
