Where to Start?

Submitted by Deril Catstone on Mon, 2008-08-18 10:00.

I'm about to delve in to college life but want walk away from it with abilities and knowledge to change the world - Bucky style.
As I assume, most people who read this are through with college - if not involved with its perpetuation - If you were to return to university for the first time again, what would you do different? Where would you focus your efforts? What subjects would you place first and last on your list?

What direction would you take to give the most by following Fuller's footsteps?

I'm very intrigued to read the responses, if any.

Thanks,
-DC

Hello Pablo, There is a great series of books out by Robert Kiyosaki, based upon his "Rich Dad - Poor Dad" life experiences. He also has a site (just google). I am in no way involved except for attending several seminars and reading books. I am I suppose a bit different than many - I am on this site and assisting you not because I have something to sell you, but becaus I want to learn and grow as Bucky and others have taught me. Kiyosaki has a book on putting together Business Plans & Proposals; as well as one on Protecting your Intellectual Property, marketing it, etc. I suggst reading 'Rich Dad - Poor Dad' as a start; it provides alot of basic vernacular and ideas. By the way, Kiyosaki seems to be a bit of a Fuller disciple himself. As I said; I had classes under Bucky in the '60's; and I recently 'discovered' Kiyosaki - Please start now with both and you will do great things! Please keep me in mind if I can help. - 1 at SIU WHO KNEW . . 61 & still a student . . . Some time I will tell about a great class assignment we had from Bucky . . .

Hi,
Can you help me finding the articles about business and intelectual rights??
thanks
Pablo

First and Sincerely - I congratulate you on your Wisdom to be thinking ahead in this manner!

Second - I Agree Totally with the comments regarding reading Kiyosaki's 'Rich Dad' and a number of the series. As a 1969 Grad of Southern Illinois Univ. who had classed under Prof Fuller, then graduated with a BS in Aeronautical Engr, I wish I had been exposed to his ideas. I learned SO MUCH in the last year after discovering his writings, and heartily recommend the ones on Business Planning, Intellectual Property, etc.

Third - and to your question - SIU was a Liberal Arts University (still is, I suppose); and also a University in the midst of the 1960's turmoil of Civil Rights, the Viet Nam War, Hippies, Anti-Establishment riots, etc etc. As you travel through college, experience the diversity outside of engineering, etc; and mingle with a broad cross-section of people; students, Faculty, and 'civilians' as well. Bucky's School of Design was not associated with the Engineering cirriculum; and operated in a different (but retrospectively more real and applied) area.

While Engineering and Technical knowledge has served me well, it is teaching you the language and basic skills. Bucky's domain puts that knowledge and those skills in the context of reality and worldliness which comes more from the 'Liberal Arts' domain than the technical. Think: "Solving regular people's problems using the right mix of technology and humanity" I remember walking by a group of his 'disciples' one day as they were working on building a 'dome' out of lashed-together bamboo for the hopeful use of teaching to the poor in Viet Nam; while a few hundred yards away an ex-Green Beret who had served there led a rally against the war.
I hope I have added some scant illumination to your search?

I congratulate you DC on 'making the most' of your studies for all humanity rather than purely for yourself or for gaining a paper qualification.

I recall Bucky answered your question somewhere in Critical Path I think ... he recommended 'aeronautical engineering' because of the need to precision and it's a very practical science.

I am a civil engineer by original training and also a risk engineer. I believe that the risk philosophy can be applied to all areas to determine the best place to spend resources for the greatest return. In some countries suck as UK risk engineering I believe is compulsory element of all engineering streams.

Another thing that Bucky always said is that if someone else is already doing it then he didn't need to do that anymore ... he would find another "problem" that needed a solution.

You could also look at how you become a comprehensivist and a generalist rather than a specialist when entering college life?

My wife and I met playing Bucky's World Game the first and last time it was played in Australia in 1998, and I have created my life purpose of transforming business very much through studying Bucky's work, through participating in experiential training programs with Robert Kiyosaki (author of 'If You Want To Be Rich and Happy, Don't Go To School' and also the 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' financial intelligence series of books; and completing the 'Curriculum for Living' at Landmark Education.

Both of these resources have provided me with an incredible strong foundation for my life and taught me principals and values that fulfill my life every day.

Last comment ... design an extraordinary life for yourself. My present mentor often says "It's easier to become wealthy and prosperous today than it is to earn a living." Bucky talks a lot about 'wealth' and it's true meaning ... the number of days forward you can live without working. For many people it is a matter of days, whereas he could see a future where we no longer 'worked for a living' rather we saw a problem and the resources were immediately made available to develop a solution to the problem.

All the best.
